Dear FDA, BPA is a Major Fail because Plastic Sucks!

Non Toxic Revolution wants to make some waves by getting #PlasticSucks to trend on Twitter on Tuesday, April 10th in order to raise awareness about the FDA’s Major FAIL on NOT banning BPA in human food packaging. We all know that Plastic Sucks and that social media has a huge amount of power. Just check out how its taken Pink Slime off the market or even changed the face of democracy by pushing social change and giving the underdog a huge voice. With your help and tweets we’ll be able to show the world that we still believe that BPA should be banned from our food supply. Our goal is to get enough people to help us trend on Twitter so the world and FDA takes notice.

How do we do this you may ask? First of all we need to get the word out. Here are a few ways to do so:

1. Follow Non Toxic Revolution on FacebookTwitter and Instagram so you’re in the know and ready to help us trend #PlasticSucks on Tuesday, April 10th.

2. Show your support by adding our #PLASTICSUCKS Twibbon to your profile photo on Facebook or Twitter now!

3. Sign our Act.ly petition to tweet change to @FDArecalls!

4. Support Non Toxic Revolution on your website or blog by posting about it why you support the ban of BPA, and help promote it on your Facebook, Twitter and other social network accounts – don’t forget to link back using http://bit.ly/bpafail link!

5. Use hashtags #PlasticSucks & #BPAFail when you are voicing your opinion on why you support this movement. Let your followers know why Plastic Sucks! and why you think BPA should be banned.

Why is this important? On Friday, March 30th regulators rejected the collective pleas of environmental groups to ban the industrial chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA), saying there was not enough scientific evidence of harm in humans.

Seriously? The NRDC had sought a ban on BPA in food packaging, food containers, and other materials likely to come into contact with food, citing studies on animals that showed the hormone-disrupting chemical was linked to brain changes, chromosomal abnormalities and some cancers. Some emerging human research has also suggested a possible link between BPA exposure and altered toddler behavior, miscarriage, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and erectile dysfunction.  That’s not enough proof to pull this off the shelf!?

In what felt more like a collapse under pressure from lobbyists, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) did not have the scientific data needed for the FDA to change current regulations, which allows the use of BPA in food packaging. (source)

Goodness! The Fail Whale sure was swimming around in a lot of plastic trash – good thing she’s a cartoon. Unfortunately, real whales – and other ocean creatures – can’t escape the massive amount of human-created toxic plastic floating and swirling around in vast trash fields called gyres. Check out Keep A Breast Ambassador and professional surfer Kassia Meador’s video on gyres below.

BPA is used in “polycarbonate” types of hard plastic bottles and as a protective lining in food and beverage cans. It can also be found on cash register receipts, paper money, and toner cartridges for printers.

Several countries have already introduced voluntary measures or laws to stop the manufacture of baby bottles with BPA and published guidelines on safer use of these containers.

According to the NRDC, Canada, the European Union, China, and at least five other countries as well as 24 US communities, all have prohibited the use of BPA in children’s products.

The Non Toxic Revolution recently ran this blog congratulating Campbell’s Soup for being the latest corporate giant to seek an alternative to BPA in its packaging.

So will you help us trend #PLASTICSUCKS?
